How to target and catch Whiting in Port Phillip Bay

Exciting news for you…

King George Whiting species photograph including top of whiting, bottom of whiting and side on view of the King George Whiting from Southern Port Phillip Bay

Do you have your own boat and want to catch more whiting when you head out into Port Phillip Bay? Are you free on a morning on 1st weekend of December?

Anglers don’t often get the chance to get out on the Bay enough to follow the fish around and know where to fish. If you fall into this category and so find yourself unsure of where best to go to find a feed of whiting or feel like there’s sometimes just a few things missing to convert bites into bag limit, you will benefit from the following. So, let’s share some knowledge!
I’m looking to start some private tuition charters aboard Seamphony specifically for anglers who want to hone in on some skills and target certain species efficiently, from scratch. First one is King George Whiting, coz we all know how tricky the little blighters are to catch! The trip is $150 with view of being $200 next year and will not only get you out there on the water for 5-6 hours but you will leave knowing:
- how to target King George Whiting efficiently without relying solely on a GPS mark
- what rigs are most effective for catching whiting
- sounding out whiting grounds
- best bait for the species and why
- catching bait
- what areas to fish and why
- best times and tides to fish for whiting and why
- how to hook them when they’re there (often this is half the battle even for experienced anglers)
and more.
Plus you can take home your catch to the family, I’ll fillet it for you. Even better, tell them you caught them all yourself on your own boat, because from then on you probably will!
We will target whiting together ‘from scratch’, fishing using top quality gear and fresh bait. We will search them out just like you would when launching your own boat.
Whiting tuition charter: 6 spots only, 1st weekend in December. Call to book on 0488229752, first in best dressed. Also taking expressions of interest for other species.
Trips will be the length of a standard charter (5-6 hours give or take) and will be aboard Seamphony. And every time you go out in your own boat from then on, get ready to bring home a feed to the family!

Kingfish, kingfish, kingfish! (and whiting).

Here’s some footage from a recent Melbourne kingfish session from Sorrento! This might give you an idea why I don’t post too many videos… I’m filming and bringing in the fish at the same time!

Wow, this Melbourne kingfish season has been a busy one so far! There’s been mixed sizes of kingies caught, from rat kingfish to decent sizes. There are a lot of recreational fishermen around so best if you can arrange to come on a weekday to beat the crowds. The busyness is all due to kingfish and it’s mayhem out there! Where there are a lot of boats, there are seals, and when they decide to pay you a visit, say bye bye if you’re fishing live bait. Kingies are a flighty fish at the best of times so I wonder sometimes if all the ruckus up above keeps them on edge. Weekday trips are the go if you can arrange it.

Kingfish are a super touchy fish and might bite one day and not the next, keeping us fishermen constantly on our toes! My charter tends to go pretty well on them but we still have the odd day where they just don’t bite, period. We work hard for these fish and when they’re on, they’re awesome! I am as honest as possible with my clientele about these trips; while the ocean and bay fishing trips have a lot of other options for fishing other species if things aren’t going our way, on the kingfish charters once we’ve got bait and are fishing for kingies, that’s what we are fishing for and there is a chance of an amazing fishing session but a small chance that they won’t be hungry at all. We had a big load of krill come into the bay recently and for those few days, no kingfish.

If you want to try your hand at these beautiful bucket list fish, let me know! Give me a call on 0488229752 or contact us on our online contact form HERE. Try to get a group of 4 together and you’ll have the best chance of getting your preferred date.

What else… Here’s some shots from customer Tiffany from a bay fishing trip a few days ago. Thanks Tiffany! She sent a message through as well:

“Thank you for today, Joe. Matt and I had a great time, and are already scheming about other trips: child-friendly and otherwise. John was a wonderful addition. Cooked up the fish tonight over coals… Bliss!  Thanks again. Tiff”

If you’ve booked a weekend charter with us, get here at least 20 minutes early to find a park and if possible try for the top carpark at the boat ramp because there is weird stuff going on with the parking meter near the Sorrento Pier and it sounds like you need a smart phone to buy a pass now and it’s a bit of a headache.

Looking forward to sharing this view with you!

What’s biting: Summer kingfish trips from Sorrento, Melbourne!

Girl holding a Kingfish caught aboard Joe Farr Fishing Charters

Hey all! Here are some pics from the last few days of kingfishing. Not too shabby! For the uninitiated, kingfish are one of those ‘bucket list’ fish and fishing for them is some of the most exciting fishing the Sorrento area has to offer. They come into the area early in January and the bigger ones are usually caught a little later in the season. No matter the size, they fight hard and they fish smart, which means fishing for them is real fishing, where you lose as many as you land, keeping many anglers coming back for that one that got away! Our strike rate has been pretty good so far and customers are loving fishing for the smaller kingies on lighter line while we try for the bigger Melbourne kingfish as well. Once hooked they are a fantastic fish to fight and bring in. Interested in a trip? Call 0488229752

For booking info for kingfish charters call on 0488229752 – try to get a group of 4 together and you’ll have the best chance of getting your preferred date

Mixed bag of good sized King George Whiting and flathead from Sorrento on the Mornington PeninsulaTriple hookup of flathead caught aboard Joe Farr Fishing Charters during summer

We’ve been fishing through December with good results on whiting, calamari, blue-spot flathead, sand flathead, trevally, gummy shark and snapper. As usual not too many posts during the busy season, there’s only so much time in the day! Now time to turn attention to the kingies as well as doing some more of the same; the good thing about Melbourne’s southern Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait area is that you can be fishing for big game sport fish one second and decide to try for whiting or calamari the next, and all going well you can do it in the one trip.

My kingfish charters are kept to 4 people only so that we can chase these fish all around the boat without getting tangled in a crowd! It helps to be a little flexible on your availability as they are tide dependant fish so the start times for trips will vary, which is why I take expressions of interest and put together trips made from this. To jump on board with us call me on 0488229752. We’ve still got some weekends free in Feb at this stage but lots of enquiries so first in best dressed, and getting your preferred date is a lot easier if you can get a group of 4 together, plus you will have the boat to yourselves.

Snapper, sharks and sun!

It’s that time of year again… the sun has decided to come out of hibernation and everyone’s eye has turned to the BIG REDS! We love snapper and there’s nothing quite as satisfying as catching your own fresh fish for a seafood dinner, especially when they fight as hard as the snapper do!

Snapper fishing charter Melbourne

A nice Bass Strait snapper early season 2014!

Fishing trips from here on in really begin to fire so it’s a good time to arrange your end of year charters and get togethers to make sure your preferred dates are secured. I only take up to 6 people to make sure everyone gets plenty of fishing space and gets looked after, so spots are limited and booking is essential.

But it’s not only snapper that’s exciting fishing at the moment. As well as snapper we’ve been going well on the gummies and the whiting are looking up at last, plus flathead are getting bigger as well. We are pretty lucky down here in southern Port Phillip Bay with the variety of catch available to us. Over the last week we’ve caught snapper, gummy shark, calamari, a few varieties of decent flathead (blue-spot and yank flathead), King George Whiting, slimy mackerel (Omega-3 anyone?), red mullet aka goatfish or ‘Baboonia’ as our Greek friends call it and a few others.

Read on for some more photos and some videos of fish being landed over the last few weeks.

Want to come on a fishing trip? Book via our contact form HERE or call me on 0488229752. Now’s the time to organise your small business end of year trips, gift vouchers for Christmas presents and your individual trip bookings for the summer season.

Here’s the end of Jean’s battle, with some smooth netting by our deckhand. Nice fishing Jean, well done.

We always seem to do well, but I guess that comes down to knowing what’s biting and how to best target it and then working HARD to put you on the fish! If you have your own boat and are wanting to know how best to target a certain species of fish then I’d recommend jumping on board for a charter. You’d be surprised how much skill you pick up just by being around other fishermen, let alone the pros. Our small numbers mean that you have me as your own personal fishing guide and I’m happy to share info to help you get onto fish when you are out on your own, minus the mess of cleaning the boat and the fish!

Here’s a quick snippet of a customer landing a nice Bass Strait snapper the other day:

Customer Mark with one of a few gummy shark from their family trip

It’s been a while since my last proper post… a lot has been going on! We went for a visit to the USA to see family for a month, but of course I managed to get a bit of fishing in there as well…

Still managed to get a fish in while O/S!

Plus I’ve been out every day since I got back (I suffer fishing withdrawals when I’m not!) and I’m glad to be able to get my customers onto a good variety once again after a combination of fairly bland fishing and weather has kept us from bagging out on much lately.

We see some pretty interesting stuff every time we get out on the water – here’s a few of the locals to Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait that pop up on our fishing charters sometimes. Say hello to this handsome fella;

The devilishly handsome stargazer, otherwise known as monkfish. Pretty cool!

You can tell a lot about what to use for bait by looking at what the fish you’ve caught has eaten recently. Check out what we found in the belly of a flathead last week;

We’ve I.D.ed this flathead dinner as a mantis shrimp… well, part of one anyway.

Don’t forget to book your end of year summer fishing trips to secure your spot. We also do GIFT CERTIFICATES which make stellar Christmas presents! If you get in early enough we’ll send through a nice hard copy. Book via our contact email form here or call me on 0488 229 752. If I’m not answering I’m out on the water so be sure to leave a message and I’ll get back to you ASAP. Looking forward to getting you out there! Best place in the world.

Melbourne Kingfish fishing at its best

Here’s some examples of kingfish fishing over the last month or so, heaps of fun especially targeting the small stuff on lighter gear!

Yellowtail kingfish go off in Bass Strait

The kingfish poster boys for Joe Farr Fishing Charters – nice day out fellas!

Kingfish are great fun to catch and I love this time of year for fishing. Some trips we only catch one, others we clean up on the kingfish, it all depends on the luck of the draw and how the fish are feeling on the day! I give you guys the gear, fresh bait and decent tackle and make sure we only go on days where the tide, swell and wind conditions are favourable for catching them.

Two nice kingies!

I go fishing whenever I can so I know what the fish are likely to be doing and what gear we’ll need for when I take you guys out on your fishing charters, and so far this season it’s paid off beautifully!

Here’s some footage from a charter catching small kingies:

I know catching a kingfish is on a lot of people’s bucket lists. They fight hard and fight dirty and you’ve really got to work hard to catch ‘em. Some days you can see them all around you but they just won’t bite. They’re pretty smart fish and aren’t easy to catch, so I’m stoked to be able to put my customers on to some great Melbourne sport fishing, the kind to write home about!

Get in touch to book your kingfish fishing charter via our contact page HERE or call me on 0488229752.

I might be fishing, leave a message and I’ll aim to get back to you the same day.

See you on the water!

Melbourne kingfish charters are go!

Here’s a few photos from our Melbourne kingfish charters from Sorrento or Queenscliff aboard Joe Farr Fishing Charters. We’ve had a pretty good run on the Melbourne yellowtail kingfish so far this season. Some days we catch a few, some days a lot. Port Phillip Bay bluefin tuna?!

It’s been exciting times lately in Port Phillip Bay! We’ve been targeting the seasonal yellowtail kingfish and we have been catching em… and bluefin tuna! Its really rare to see these prized sport fish in this region, with people usually flocking down to Portland Victoria to catch them which is a few hours west of Melbourne. Tuna haven’t been recorded in the waters of Port Phillip Bay for a very long time and we were informed today by a well respected source that the last officially recorded bluefin in the area was in 1981. So… we’re stoked for our charter to be able to share some of our surprise catches with you!

Port Phillip Bay bluefin tuna 2014

The first recorded bluefin tuna caught in these waters in MANY years! She’s small but she’s a beauty and caused a bit of a ruckus on Facebook: www.facebook.com/joefarrfishing

Here is some footage from our second bluefin tuna catch a day later, customer Elias reeling it in and myself finishing the job at his request. Our prize? A 20kg tuna, what a beauty!

Another day, another tuna! What a beauty! Customer Elias with his catch of some prize Port Phillip Bay sashimi

And the next day we just had to try for another…

Tuna number 3 for Joe Farr Fishing Charters at Port Phillip Heads

Tuna number 3 on day 3! Dave with the 10kg fish. Woohoo

It’s not completely unheard of to sight bluefin tuna in Port Phillip Bay as the occasional school can follow bait fish along the coast into the bay… where there’s food, there’s fish! Having said that, it’s been a really long time since the sport fishing’s been this good in the area and I’m stoked to be able to take my customers out for some rare and exciting fishing. The kingfish are awesome to fish for and the tuna are as well… it’s going to be a great kingy season!

If you want to book a fishing trip give me a buzz on 0488 229 752 or contact us via our online contact form HERE.

Seeing as these tuna have created a bit of hype, it’s important that I let you all know a bit about the waters of southern Port Phillip Bay.

The tidal waters of the Rip are some of the most dangerous waters in the world. A lot of water busts through that tiny entrance which makes it hugely tidal and stand up waves can appear above boats heads in a matter of seconds, even when it looks calm. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, it’s scary and it’s enough to have given me a great respect for the waters here. If you don’t know these waters like the back of your hand, you probably shouldn’t be in ‘em.

So for those who are inevitably going to want to try to catch some bluefin, I can’t stress enough, GO WITH A PROFESSIONAL THAT KNOWS THE WATERS and learn about them beofre you just head out there, and STAY OUT OF THE SHIPPING CHANNELS. The fish I’ve been catching have been out of the tide and nowhere near the shipping channels. Pilots have complained before about fishing boats being in the way and if we want to keep fishing in these beautiful waters for years to come, steer clear!

kingfish-rip-charters

A few small kingies as well. Kingfish are fun to fish for because they fight hard and rub on the bottom

In other news, the whiting fishing is great as usual with good size and customers have been going home with decent bags of good size fillets for the family! We love our whiting, some of the best tasting fish out there we reckon, grilled in the oven with a little salt and pepper and a fresh salad to accompany it… the dinner of kings!

Nice sized King George

Looking forward to seeing you on the water! Exciting times!
