Snapper, sharks and sun!

It’s that time of year again… the sun has decided to come out of hibernation and everyone’s eye has turned to the BIG REDS! We love snapper and there’s nothing quite as satisfying as catching your own fresh fish for a seafood dinner, especially when they fight as hard as the snapper do!

Snapper fishing charter Melbourne

A nice Bass Strait snapper early season 2014!

Fishing trips from here on in really begin to fire so it’s a good time to arrange your end of year charters and get togethers to make sure your preferred dates are secured. I only take up to 6 people to make sure everyone gets plenty of fishing space and gets looked after, so spots are limited and booking is essential.

But it’s not only snapper that’s exciting fishing at the moment. As well as snapper we’ve been going well on the gummies and the whiting are looking up at last, plus flathead are getting bigger as well. We are pretty lucky down here in southern Port Phillip Bay with the variety of catch available to us. Over the last week we’ve caught snapper, gummy shark, calamari, a few varieties of decent flathead (blue-spot and yank flathead), King George Whiting, slimy mackerel (Omega-3 anyone?), red mullet aka goatfish or ‘Baboonia’ as our Greek friends call it and a few others.

Read on for some more photos and some videos of fish being landed over the last few weeks.

Want to come on a fishing trip? Book via our contact form HERE or call me on 0488229752. Now’s the time to organise your small business end of year trips, gift vouchers for Christmas presents and your individual trip bookings for the summer season.

Gummy shark caught aboard Joe Farr Fishing Charters Sorrento

Bass Strait gummy shark caught by customer Jean – well done Jean!

Here’s the end of Jean’s battle, with some smooth netting by our deckhand. Nice fishing Jean, well done.

We always seem to do well, but I guess that comes down to knowing what’s biting and how to best target it and then working HARD to put you on the fish! If you have your own boat and are wanting to know how best to target a certain species of fish then I’d recommend jumping on board for a charter. You’d be surprised how much skill you pick up just by being around other fishermen, let alone the pros. Our small numbers mean that you have me as your own personal fishing guide and I’m happy to share info to help you get onto fish when you are out on your own, minus the mess of cleaning the boat and the fish!

Here’s a quick snippet of a customer landing a nice Bass Strait snapper the other day:

Gummy shark caught aboard gummy shark fishing trip on Joe Farr Fishing Charters off Sorrento

Customer Mark with one of a few gummy shark from their family trip

It’s been a while since my last proper post… a lot has been going on! We went for a visit to the USA to see family for a month, but of course I managed to get a bit of fishing in there as well…

Joe Farr with a sockeye salmon caught in the USA

Still managed to get a fish in while O/S!

Plus I’ve been out every day since I got back (I suffer fishing withdrawals when I’m not!) and I’m glad to be able to get my customers onto a good variety once again after a combination of fairly bland fishing and weather has kept us from bagging out on much lately.

We see some pretty interesting stuff every time we get out on the water – here’s a few of the locals to Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait that pop up on our fishing charters sometimes. Say hello to this handsome fella;

The unique fish the stargazer aboard Joe Farr Fishing Charters

The devilishly handsome stargazer, otherwise known as monkfish. Pretty cool!

You can tell a lot about what to use for bait by looking at what the fish you’ve caught has eaten recently. Check out what we found in the belly of a flathead last week;

Mantis shrimp from the belly of a Port Phillip Bay flathead, partially digested

We’ve I.D.ed this flathead dinner as a mantis shrimp… well, part of one anyway.

Don’t forget to book your end of year summer fishing trips to secure your spot. We also do GIFT CERTIFICATES which make stellar Christmas presents! If you get in early enough we’ll send through a nice hard copy. Book via our contact email form here or call me on 0488 229 752. If I’m not answering I’m out on the water so be sure to leave a message and I’ll get back to you ASAP. Looking forward to getting you out there! Best place in the world.

Melbourne Kingfish fishing at its best

Here’s some examples of kingfish fishing over the last month or so, heaps of fun especially targeting the small stuff on lighter gear!

Yellowtail kingfish go off in Bass Strait

The kingfish poster boys for Joe Farr Fishing Charters – nice day out fellas!

Kingfish are great fun to catch and I love this time of year for fishing. Some trips we only catch one, others we clean up on the kingfish, it all depends on the luck of the draw and how the fish are feeling on the day! I give you guys the gear, fresh bait and decent tackle and make sure we only go on days where the tide, swell and wind conditions are favourable for catching them.

Two nice kingies!

I go fishing whenever I can so I know what the fish are likely to be doing and what gear we’ll need for when I take you guys out on your fishing charters, and so far this season it’s paid off beautifully!

Customer Ross with a beauty! All in a days work, well done

Me and Ross’ prize catch of the day! (same fish)

Here’s some footage from a charter catching small kingies:

I know catching a kingfish is on a lot of people’s bucket lists. They fight hard and fight dirty and you’ve really got to work hard to catch ‘em. Some days you can see them all around you but they just won’t bite. They’re pretty smart fish and aren’t easy to catch, so I’m stoked to be able to put my customers on to some great Melbourne sport fishing, the kind to write home about!

Get in touch to book your kingfish fishing charter via our contact page HERE or call me on 0488229752.

I might be fishing, leave a message and I’ll aim to get back to you the same day.

See you on the water!

Melbourne kingfish charters are go!

Here’s a few photos from our Melbourne kingfish charters from Sorrento or Queenscliff aboard Joe Farr Fishing Charters. We’ve had a pretty good run on the Melbourne yellowtail kingfish so far this season. Some days we catch a few, some days a lot. The size isn’t huge but they still pull hard and are great fun to catch once they’re hooked!

Port Phillip Bay bluefin tuna?!

It’s been exciting times lately in Port Phillip Bay! We’ve been targeting the seasonal yellowtail kingfish and we have been catching em… and bluefin tuna! Its really rare to see these prized sport fish in this region, with people usually flocking down to Portland Victoria to catch them which is a few hours west of Melbourne. Tuna haven’t been recorded in the waters of Port Phillip Bay for a very long time and we were informed today by a well respected source that the last officially recorded bluefin in the area was in 1981. So… we’re stoked for our charter to be able to share some of our surprise catches with you!

Port Phillip Bay bluefin tuna 2014

The first recorded bluefin tuna caught in these waters in MANY years! She’s small but she’s a beauty and caused a bit of a ruckus on Facebook: www.facebook.com/joefarrfishing

Here is some footage from our second bluefin tuna catch a day later, customer Elias reeling it in and myself finishing the job at his request. Our prize? A 20kg tuna, what a beauty!

Another day, another tuna! What a beauty! Customer Elias with his catch of some prize Port Phillip Bay sashimi

And the next day we just had to try for another…

Tuna number 3 for Joe Farr Fishing Charters at Port Phillip Heads

Tuna number 3 on day 3! Dave with the 10kg fish. Woohoo

It’s not completely unheard of to sight bluefin tuna in Port Phillip Bay as the occasional school can follow bait fish along the coast into the bay… where there’s food, there’s fish! Having said that, it’s been a really long time since the sport fishing’s been this good in the area and I’m stoked to be able to take my customers out for some rare and exciting fishing. The kingfish are awesome to fish for and the tuna are as well… it’s going to be a great kingy season!

If you want to book a fishing trip give me a buzz on 0488 229 752 or contact us via our online contact form HERE.

Seeing as these tuna have created a bit of hype, it’s important that I let you all know a bit about the waters of southern Port Phillip Bay.

The tidal waters of the Rip are some of the most dangerous waters in the world. A lot of water busts through that tiny entrance which makes it hugely tidal and stand up waves can appear above boats heads in a matter of seconds, even when it looks calm. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, it’s scary and it’s enough to have given me a great respect for the waters here. If you don’t know these waters like the back of your hand, you probably shouldn’t be in ‘em.

So for those who are inevitably going to want to try to catch some bluefin, I can’t stress enough, GO WITH A PROFESSIONAL THAT KNOWS THE WATERS and learn about them beofre you just head out there, and STAY OUT OF THE SHIPPING CHANNELS. The fish I’ve been catching have been out of the tide and nowhere near the shipping channels. Pilots have complained before about fishing boats being in the way and if we want to keep fishing in these beautiful waters for years to come, steer clear!

kingfish-rip-charters

A few small kingies as well. Kingfish are fun to fish for because they fight hard and rub on the bottom

In other news, the whiting fishing is great as usual with good size and customers have been going home with decent bags of good size fillets for the family! We love our whiting, some of the best tasting fish out there we reckon, grilled in the oven with a little salt and pepper and a fresh salad to accompany it… the dinner of kings!

King George Whiting

Nice sized King George

Looking forward to seeing you on the water! Exciting times!

Kingfish are here

Kingfish have arrived in southern Port Phillip Bay so I’m now taking bookings to target them. Our kingfish fishing charters leave from Sorrento or Queenscliff and target yellowtail kingfish in Bass Strait. Kingfish or ‘kingies’ are powerfully fast, pull hard and fight dirty and are one of the most exciting sport fish to target in Melbourne. The yellowtail kingfish are only here for a short time so give us a buzz on 0488 229 752 to make sure you get a spot on board!

Summer fishing – hot hot hot!

Welcome to Summer, our peak fishing season here in Victoria! The heat is finally on and summer fishing 2013 is booming along nicely, with a great range of fish being caught. After a long haul of wind chill it finally seems like summer has decided to come to the party and customers can enjoy blue skies as well as some great fishing from Sorrento and Queenscliff.

As usual Port Phillip Bay has the premium fishing for the area, with King George Whiting are fishing well in Port Phillip Bay, plenty of good sized flathead and silver trevally are going crazy… with some catch and release sessions of well over 150 fish!

Mixed bag of whiting, silver trevally and flathead

There are some big salmon around with some monster mackerel mixed in amongst them… fishing is good at the moment with Joe Farr Fishing Charters!

I’ve also been taking charters offshore through the Rip at Port Phillip Heads into Bass Strait where the bluespot flathead have arrived and the shark fishing is good in calm conditions. Think flathead fishing is boring? You’ll think again when you see these whoppers, and they are one of my favourite fish to eat along with King George Whiting, which have been showing up in good size lately of up to 50cm.

Needless to say we’ve been having a few more BBQ’s than usual with all the fresh fish we have been catching, and we enjoy sending our customers home with their cleaned and filleted catch so they can do the same!

Mornington Peninsula boat sightseeing trip: Tall Ships

Well the Tall Ships have gone and the International Tall Ship Festival has finished in Melbourne, fishing’s picking up after a few weeks of the duldrums and the school holidays are here!

If you missed seeing the ships leave Melbourne that’s alright, we have plenty of photos to share.

europa-blairgowrie-yacht-squadron-2013

We took two sighseeing cruises out from Sorrento into Port Phillip Bay to get up close and see the ships say goodbye to Melbourne.

europa-melbourne-2013

The evening sunset cruise from Sorrento around Blairgowrie/Capel Sound had a really nice local family on board, another super friendly local girl involved with the Mornington Farmers Market (check it out!) and a couple from Melbourne keen to get out on the water for something a bit different. The kids in particular were loving being out on the water, it’s something a bit different for them and seeing ships that looked like something from Pirates of the Caribbean from up close was pretty cool for not only the littler ones but for all of us.

The morning boat trip from Sorrento to Port Phillip Heads to see the ships leave Melbourne to set sail for Hobart had a great mixed bag of passengers; ‘Marzy’ from local Mornington Peninsula radio RPP FM (98.7FM)’s “Breakfast with Johnno and Marzy 6-9am” doing live crosses to Bob Phillips’ show from our cabin, a local couple on the cruise as birthday present, a few more locals (including my partner Em who hi-jacked one of the spots to do some awesome photography for us), another photographer, and a Melbourne family including a man of Dutch origin keen to see some of his nation’s history sailing up close and who gave us a much needed lesson on how the heck to pronounce ‘Oosterschelde’.

oosterschelde-rotterdam-melbourne-2013

sightseeing-mornington-peninsula-to-do-boat-cruise

We followed the ships as they unanchored off Blairgowrie and were led into the shipping lanes where we got to see them unfurl the sails for their parade out of the Heads. We cruised along the line of ships and my passengers waved to the crew, took photos and chatted.

soren-larsen-melbourne-2013-sail

Both our Sorrento boat trips were completely sold out (9 people each) but there was plenty of space on boardSeamphonyand everyone seemed to be having a good time. I always try to keep my boat clean and comfortable, which means regularly changing a black boat covered in squid ink back into a pure white boat, cleaning the toilet, maintaining the motor, repainting…who says fishermen aren’t domestic? Some champagne was cracked to toast the ships as they left through the Rip after parading past Queenscliff. By this stage there was no time to relax for me, I was busy navigating a charter boat through a maze of boats who had all come to farewell the ships on their leg from Melbourne to Hobart… peak hour was ON!

melbourne-tall-ship-cruise-2013

Check out the people packed onto Point Nepean! Just quietly, I think we had pretty good seats.

point-nepean-heads-ships

We did some sightseeing of some of Melbourne’s historic barracks and the Quarantine station as well as the Portsea mansions on the way back and we got some really nice feedback from the trip from the crew on board. Thanks again guys.

If you’re thinking of getting out on the water with us, do it! You can book it in via our contact form or give me a call on 0488229752.

Sightseeing off the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsula is some of Melbourne’s best, particularly if we time it with sunset… you’re on your own over the water and there’s so much variety in what we can do! School holidays are here, our charter is family friendly! We have all kinds of animals and marine life visit us and can cruise to any of the local sightseeing attractions on the Peninsula and the Bay. Special opportunity to see Tall Ships leaving Melbourne from up close!

The Melbourne International Tall Ship Festival 2013 runs from the 6th – 14th September and we are thrilled to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity for up close viewing of the biggest gathering of fully rigged tall ships the Bay has seen since 1988, right here from the Mornington Peninsula!

Melbourne International Tall Ships Sorrento Rosebud Tootgarook

From the 6th-14th September 2013, Melbourne will be a host port to up to 8 tall ships from around the world.

For a chance to see these majestic ships in all their glory, Joe Farr Fishing Charters will be taking ‘Seamphony’ out onto the water with them for an up close and personal viewing of the ships as they leave Melbourne and through Port Phillip Heads in company for the next leg of their worldwide journey, bound for Hobart.

Viewing trips will take place on the 14th and 15th of September and will have no more than 9 people on board plus skipper.

We have 2 exciting trip opportunities to see the tall ships;

SATURDAY THE 14th – AFTERNOON/EVENING CRUISE $90 p.p. Departs 4.30pm Sorrento

An afternoon/evening cruise on Saturday the 14th to see the overnight anchoring of the ships off Capel Sound (between Rosebud West and Tootgarook) as they leave Melbourne on their way for Hobart

SUNDAY THE 15th – HIGH TIDE BON VOYAGE $120 p.p. Departs 7.30am Sorrento

A trip to see the ships off on their voyage as they set sail out of Port Phillip Bay through Port Phillip Heads at high tide in company, destined for Hobart, Tasmania. The biggest spectacle of the Tall Ships Festival 2013, the finale, right here at home on the Mornington Peninsula! See the crowds gather on shore at Rosebud, Tootgarook, Rye, Sorrento, Blairgowrie and Portsea to hopefully catch a glimpse of the 2013 tall ships sail by. YOU on the other hand will see the tall ships from up close as they power through the water together and take in the whole spectacle that is the end of the 2013 Melbourne International Tall Ship Festival… the best seat in the house! Wish the ships Bon Voyage with a complimentary glass of champagne, beer or soft drink.

Fantastic photo opportunities.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so book now with Joe on 0488229752 or contact us HERE to avoid disappointment, as numbers are strictly limited.

Participating vessels include: LORD NELSON from the UK, EUROPA, OOSTERSCHELDE and TECLA from the Netherlands, YOUNG ENDEAVOUR and SOREN LARSEN from Sydney, WINDWARD BOUND from Hobart and Melbourne’s own tall-ship the replica ENTERPRIZE.

Our viewing charter vessel Seamphony is no tall ship but she is definitely one of the cleanest and most modern charter boats around southern Port Phillip Bay. She is  small enough to offer the maneuverability and speed that will give you an unequalled viewing of the tall ships as they transit, but big enough to be comfortable! She is ideal for sightseeing, with space for deck chairs, a few drinks and some good company.

To make your booking call Joe on 0488229752 or contact us via email HERE to secure your spot!

Please note: The waters of southern Port Phillip Bay around Port Phillip Heads can be unpredictable and dangerous. If you want to view the tall ships it will be important to go with a qualified and licensed vessel and if not, to steer clear of the Rip especially during these times of high boat traffic. Joe Farr is an experienced skipper with local knowledge and Heads Endorsement. Be safe out there on the water!
