Winter fishing is great here in Melbourne and the fish don’t mind the cold.. but I just loove that springtime fishing. Waiting and testing for if the snapper run is coming into the bay, warmer days, a bit of rain here and there. It’s a season of change and once the snapper are here (and they are) they’re around for months and we’ve been onto a great variety of fish including whiting, squid, flathead, trevally, Aus salmon, garfish… As always, I am aware how LUCKY we are to be able to live here and fish the abundant waters of Southern Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait. Fishing here is diverse and while we see some of the major players regularly (whiting, calamari, flathead, snapper) no two days are ever the same and that’s what makes it awesome. Here is a snapshot of the kind of things we’ve been fishing for last few months, plus a few videos created for clients of their catch with footage from our new Go Pro hire option (we’re getting technical these days!):

KING GEORGE WHITING

King George whiting… well done buddy!

This video is from a whiting fishing trip in southern Port Phillip Bay and should give you a good idea what a fishing charter when the whiting are on can be like. We cater to all experience levels so it can be great to get some mates together and book a fishing charter even if they aren’t all keen fishermen… we just might convert a few!

SNAPPER

When they’re on, it’s great fun and makes the bleary-eyed early start worthwhile! This snapper fishing video from Port Phillip Bay shows how peaceful it can be out there even when fish are on.

FAMILY TRIPS: We’ve been doing lots of private family fishing trips in the afternoons, with trips designed for families with younger kids. They are going down a treat and we get fantastic feedback from parents who tell us how much their whole family actually really enjoyed doing THE SAME THING! This footage is actually from earlier in the year but it’ll give you a good idea of what a private family Melbourne fishing trip can look like, and we are coming into a similar time of year now as when this was filmed. We do offer fishing charter gift vouchers for Christmas and birthdays so if your little ones would enjoy an adventure, get in touch with Em on 0418306431 to arrange or via the contact form HERE. Last minute is ok too.. we can email them to you!

We went OS to visit family for a few weeks this year. Of course, managed to fish almost every day for Sockeye salmon. It was nice to get away and take our little one fishing in the same spot I learned to fish when I was the same age.

Here are some pics from a recent charter aboard our new girl ‘Seamphony’! Lucky for us (and our clients) she is a fishy boat and clients so far have had good success reeling in the fish! We’ve had positive feedback on ‘Seamphony’ from our clients so far, some kind enough to give us a testimonial on our Facebook page.

Nice size snapper caught aboard ‘Seamphony’. What a birthday present!

“This is one amazing boat and has all the room one could want. Have been priviledged to have a few fishes off of her and was very impressed. Great boat, great skipper, will have many more trips on her. Congrats Joe.” Colin (Cheers mate).

Snap!

“Very comfortable and spacious charter vessel. Joe is an extremely professional skipper , and most importantly, he knows where to find the fish. Going out with Joe on Seamphony is a great experience.” Jeff (Thanks Jeff).

So… it’s been an interesting windy crazy few weeks, with a boat overturned at Portsea on its mooring in the 40 knot winds and another wreck in Port Phillip Heads which has left oil gushing out into our beautiful local fishing grounds at Nepean Bay off the Point Nepean National Park for a few days now. I’m not happy about it… it’s heartbreaking actually… because nothing seems to be being done about it and it’s just bobbing around in there with people venturing into dangerous waters to ‘have a look’ while it gushes out muck into part of our beautiful fishing grounds. I’ve been on the phone to the EPA and it looks like it’s Port of Melbourne jurisdiction to clean up the wreck. I’m calling around to get my facts straight before I go pointing the finger in anyone’s direction. In the meantime oil that burns your nostrils if you’re anywhere nearby is spewing out of this vessel with the swell into Nepean Bay and the waters surrounding Point Nepean National Park.

I’ve put a pic of the Port Phillip Heads shipwreck (check out the oil) on our fishing charter’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/joefarrfishing

If you want to see the wreck please do it from land at Point Nepean. The Rip is dangerous. It wrecked in the most treacherous spot in the Rip where, in certain wind/tide/wave conditions, it seems completely calm and then suddenly a wave bigger than your boat appears right next to you and breaks. Check out our video footage of the boat instead (will upload soon).

Oh yeah, and BOOK YOUR TUNA TRIP FOR MAY NOW! Here’s one for the kids; What’s the difference between a fish and a piano?… You can’t tuna fish!!

Joe

Everybody loooves the snap snaps and punters go crazy for these tough little fish who love to put up a good fight and are super tasty! They took a while to do their thing this year but it’s all happening in Port Phillip Bay particularly early in the mornings if the tides are right and we’ve had a lot of happy clients take a good feed home for family and friends! Nothing like a Christmas BBQ snapper over the summer holidays, particularly if you’re the one that caught it!

If you’re thinking about booking a fishing charter over the holidays it’s best to get in quick.
